About

Whilst working for Landscape Projects Fergus Alexander worked to design the shortlisted proposal for Victoria Square in Blackburn as part of the Pennine Squares competition for 6 new public squares.

The design sought to create a new type of public space in Blackburn.  This was to be less formal and more varied and playful than the traditional Victorian public spaces that are ever present in the town.  The scheme sought to invite the newer communities of Blackburn to use the public spaces by linking the city centre though to areas which are currently quite cut off by traffic infrastructure.  The proposal also attempted to soften the 1960's shopping centre and invite the use of the deck carpark as a significant piece of public realm in the town centre.

Two new buildings were also proposed in the scheme which would activate the new public spaces.
